SCIENCE / MINERALOGY
Agate is a microcrystalline variety of quartz (chalcedony), composed primarily of SiO₂. It commonly forms in bands, layers, plumes, eyes, moss-like inclusions, or other patterned structures created as silica is deposited in repeated stages.

GEOLOGY & FORMATION
Agate most often develops in cavities and fractures within volcanic rocks, where silica-rich fluids repeatedly coat cavity walls and gradually fill open space. It can also occur in sedimentary environments and weathered nodules. Important sources include Brazil, Uruguay, Mexico, India, Madagascar, the United States, and many other regions.
