Rainbow Obsidian

SCIENCE / MINERALOGY
Rainbow Obsidian is a trade variety of obsidian, a natural silica-rich volcanic glass. Obsidian is amorphous rather than crystalline and commonly shows conchoidal fracture, flow banding, bubbles, or devitrification textures.

GEOLOGY & FORMATION
It forms when rhyolitic or similarly silica-rich lava cools rapidly near the surface before crystals can grow. Flow, oxidation, bubbles, and partial devitrification create the variety-specific patterns.

METAPHYSICAL PROPERTIES
Rainbow Obsidian is traditionally associated with grounding, protection, discernment, and emotional steadiness. Its shifting optical colors make it a natural symbol of perspective: the same material can reveal different qualities when conditions or viewpoints change. Practitioners commonly use it as a contemplative aid for staying centered when circumstances feel intense, distracting, or uncertain. These associations are part of crystal traditions and are not scientifically established medical effects.
