Purple Jade is a jade trade/locality name. Genuine jade is either jadeitite dominated by jadeite pyroxene or nephrite dominated by tightly intergrown tremolite-actinolite amphibole; some commercial 'jade' names are applied to unrelated rocks.

Jade forms in high-pressure subduction systems (jadeite) or metasomatic alteration zones involving ultramafic and carbonate rocks (nephrite).
