Onyx

SCIENCE / MINERALOGY
True Onyx is a variety of chalcedony with straight, parallel bands, commonly black-and-white, brown-and-white, or other contrasting layers. Commercial decorative 'onyx' is also widely misapplied to banded calcite or aragonite.

GEOLOGY & FORMATION
Chalcedony onyx forms by repeated silica deposition in cavities and fractures; carbonate 'onyx' forms in spring, cave, or hydrothermal environments.

METAPHYSICAL PROPERTIES
Onyx is traditionally associated with clarity, balance, resilience, and intentional personal growth. Its natural structure, color, and geological history provide a symbolic framework for approaching change with greater awareness. Practitioners commonly use it as a contemplative aid for reflecting on priorities and choosing a more deliberate response instead of reacting automatically. These associations are part of crystal traditions and are not scientifically established medical effects.

ACCURACY / TRADE-NAME NOTE
Commercial name is ambiguous. Verify whether a specimen is true chalcedony onyx or banded carbonate.
