Mariposite

SCIENCE / MINERALOGY
Mariposite is a historical varietal and rock term for chromium-rich green phengitic mica, commonly occurring in quartz-carbonate metamorphic rock. The mica is related to muscovite and owes its green coloration to chromium. 'Mariposite' is not recognized as a distinct IMA mineral species and is also used for the attractive green-and-white rock containing the mica.

GEOLOGY & FORMATION
Mariposite-bearing rocks are especially associated with hydrothermal alteration of serpentinite and mafic rocks in California's Mother Lode gold belt. Carbonate-, silica-, and chromium-bearing fluids altered host rocks and precipitated quartz, carbonate minerals, green mica, and locally gold. Similar chromian mica occurs worldwide.

METAPHYSICAL PROPERTIES
Mariposite is traditionally associated with patience, emotional balance, resilience, truth, and building something lasting through consistent effort. Its geological association with long-term alteration and historic gold districts gives it symbolism of value emerging through gradual transformation.

KEY PROPERTIES
Patience • Emotional balance • Resilience • Truth • Growth • Grounding • Persistence

CHAKRA: Heart
ELEMENT: Earth
ZODIAC: Aquarius
MOHS HARDNESS: ~2–3 for mica; rock varies

ACCURACY / TRADE-NAME NOTE
Not a distinct IMA mineral species. The green mica is chromium-rich phengite/muscovite; commercial rock may also contain quartz, carbonate, and serpentine.
