Malachite
SCIENCE / MINERALOGY
Malachite is a basic copper carbonate mineral, Cu₂CO₃(OH)₂, crystallizing in the monoclinic system. It is famous for vivid green banding, botryoidal growth, stalactitic masses, fibrous aggregates, and rare prismatic crystals. Its green color is produced directly by copper in the structure.
GEOLOGY & FORMATION
Malachite forms in the oxidized zones of copper deposits where copper-rich groundwater reacts with carbonate-bearing rocks and fluids. It commonly occurs with azurite, chrysocolla, cuprite, native copper, and limonite. Major specimen sources include the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Zambia, Namibia, Morocco, Russia, and Arizona.
METAPHYSICAL PROPERTIES
Malachite is traditionally associated with transformation, emotional honesty, protection, personal growth, and recognizing patterns that need to change. Its concentric banding gives it a strong symbolic connection with layers of experience and recurring emotional habits.
