Mahogany Obsidian

Mahogany Obsidian

Mahogany Obsidian

SCIENCE / MINERALOGY
Mahogany Obsidian is natural volcanic glass with black and reddish-brown to mahogany flow patterns. The brown-red coloration is produced by iron oxides and iron-rich inclusions distributed through the silica-rich glass. Because obsidian is amorphous, it has no true crystal system.

GEOLOGY & FORMATION
Obsidian forms when viscous silica-rich lava cools rapidly enough to prevent substantial crystal growth. Flow banding, oxidation, and distribution of iron-rich particles create the contrasting mahogany patterns. Important commercial sources include Mexico and the western United States.

METAPHYSICAL PROPERTIES
Mahogany Obsidian is traditionally associated with grounding, strength, protection, self-confidence, and rebuilding after disruption. Its red-brown patterning adds a warmer, more activating symbolism to the reflective qualities commonly associated with obsidian.
