Libyan Desert Glass

Libyan Desert Glass

Libyan Desert Glass

SCIENCE / MINERALOGY
Libyan Desert Glass is a natural silica-rich glass found in the Great Sand Sea of western Egypt near the Libyan border. It is mostly amorphous silica with minor inclusions and high-temperature mineral products. The material is approximately 29 million years old and ranges from pale yellow and greenish yellow to nearly colorless or brown.

GEOLOGY & FORMATION
The glass formed when silica-rich surface material was melted at extremely high temperature during an extraterrestrial impact-related event. Research has documented high-temperature phases, shocked material, and other evidence supporting impact involvement, although debate continues over the exact mechanism and whether formation was tied to a crater impact or an airburst-related process.

METAPHYSICAL PROPERTIES
Libyan Desert Glass is traditionally associated with transformation, confidence, personal will, manifestation, and expanding perspective beyond familiar limits. Its extraordinary formation by a brief high-energy event gives it symbolism of irreversible change and converting intense experience into a new state.

KEY PROPERTIES
Transformation • Confidence • Personal will • Manifestation • Perspective • Courage • Purpose

CHAKRA: Solar Plexus • Crown
ELEMENT: Fire • Air

MOHS HARDNESS: ~5.5–6

ACCURACY / TRADE-NAME NOTE
Natural impact-related silica glass, not a conventional mineral or volcanic obsidian. Exact formation mechanism remains an active scientific question.
