Lazulite
SCIENCE / MINERALOGY
Lazulite is a magnesium aluminum phosphate hydroxide mineral with the formula MgAl₂(PO₄)₂(OH)₂. It crystallizes in the monoclinic system and forms deep blue, sky-blue, greenish-blue, or blue-white crystals and granular masses. Iron can substitute for magnesium toward scorzalite.
GEOLOGY & FORMATION
Lazulite occurs in high-grade metamorphic rocks, quartzites, phosphate-rich pegmatites, and hydrothermal veins where phosphorus, magnesium, and aluminum are concentrated. Notable deposits occur in Austria, Canada, Brazil, Sweden, Madagascar, and the southeastern United States.
METAPHYSICAL PROPERTIES
Lazulite is traditionally associated with intuition, mental clarity, learning, expanded awareness, and turning curiosity into disciplined study. Its deep blue color gives it strong third-eye symbolism while its phosphate mineralogy suggests focused growth and organization.
