Lava Rock

Lava Rock

Lava Rock

SCIENCE / MINERALOGY
Lava Rock is a broad trade term for porous volcanic rock, most commonly basaltic scoria or vesicular basalt. It is a rock composed of several minerals and volcanic glass rather than a single mineral species. Its holes are vesicles created when gas bubbles were trapped as lava rapidly cooled.

GEOLOGY & FORMATION
Vesicular lava forms during volcanic eruptions when gas-rich magma reaches the surface and pressure drops. Dissolved gases expand into bubbles while the surrounding melt cools and solidifies. Basaltic lava rocks commonly contain plagioclase, pyroxene, olivine, iron oxides, and glass in varying proportions.

METAPHYSICAL PROPERTIES
Lava Rock is traditionally associated with grounding, courage, renewal, endurance, and rebuilding after major change. Its formation from molten material cooling into solid rock makes it one of the clearest geological symbols of transformation becoming stability.

KEY PROPERTIES
Grounding • Courage • Transformation • Endurance • Renewal • Stability • Strength

CHAKRA: Root
ELEMENT: Fire • Earth
ZODIAC: Aries • Scorpio
MOHS HARDNESS: Variable; commonly ~5–6

ACCURACY / TRADE-NAME NOTE
Generic volcanic-rock trade term. Composition and hardness vary widely depending on whether material is basalt, scoria, pumice, or another lava rock.
