Iris Agate

Iris Agate

Iris Agate

SCIENCE / MINERALOGY
Iris Agate is an exceptionally fine-banded variety of agate that can display spectral rainbow colors when thin slices are viewed in transmitted light. The effect results from diffraction and interference as light passes through microscopic, regularly spaced chalcedony bands. In ordinary reflected light, the stone may appear pale, gray, white, or only subtly banded.

GEOLOGY & FORMATION
Like other agates, Iris Agate forms through repeated deposition of microcrystalline silica in cavities and fractures. Extremely fine rhythmic banding develops under unusually consistent growth conditions. When cut thin and oriented correctly, the spacing of these bands interacts with visible light to produce the iris effect.

METAPHYSICAL PROPERTIES
Iris Agate is traditionally associated with clarity, perspective, patience, intuition, and discovering qualities that are not obvious at first glance. Its rainbow appears only under specific viewing conditions, making it a natural symbol of changing perspective and hidden structure.

KEY PROPERTIES

ACCURACY / TRADE-NAME NOTE
Agate/chalcedony optical variety. Rainbow effect is produced by fine internal banding, not surface coating.
