Limonite is a field and rock term for mixtures of hydrated iron oxides and oxyhydroxides, commonly dominated by goethite with variable lepidocrocite, hematite, clays, and water. Iridescent Limonite displays metallic rainbow colors from thin surface films or finely layered oxide textures. It is not a single mineral species.

GEOLOGY & FORMATION
Limonitic material develops extensively during weathering of iron-bearing rocks and sulfide ore deposits. Groundwater transports and reprecipitates iron near the surface, forming gossans, crusts, stalactites, and botryoidal masses. Thin alteration layers can create interference colors.
