Iridescent Goethite is iron oxyhydroxide, FeO(OH), showing metallic rainbow tarnish or thin-film colors. The older term 'turgite' has historically been applied to mixtures or intermediate-looking hydrated iron oxides and is not accepted as a distinct modern mineral species. Hematite may occur with goethite in some iridescent specimens.

GEOLOGY & FORMATION
Goethite forms through weathering and oxidation of iron-bearing minerals in gossans, iron deposits, soils, and hydrothermal environments. Thin oxide films and fine layered textures can produce interference colors across botryoidal or stalactitic surfaces. Notable iridescent material comes from several iron districts worldwide.
