SCIENCE / MINERALOGY
Iridescent Calcite is calcite, CaCO₃, displaying rainbow colors caused by thin-film interference, internal fractures, surface alteration, microscopic coatings, or closely spaced cleavage features. The rainbow effect is optical rather than a separate mineral chemistry. Calcite remains trigonal with perfect rhombohedral cleavage and a hardness of 3.

GEOLOGY & FORMATION
Calcite forms in hydrothermal veins, sedimentary carbonates, caves, and metamorphic rocks. Iridescence can develop naturally where very thin surface films or internal microfractures reflect different wavelengths of light. Some commercial rainbow calcite may also be coated or treated, so provenance matters.
