Iowaite is a rare hydrated magnesium-iron chloride hydroxide mineral of the hydrotalcite group, commonly represented as Mg₆Fe³⁺₂(OH)₁₆Cl₂·4H₂O. It is very soft and typically occurs as pale green, bluish green, white, or colorless platy, foliated, or massive material.
GEOLOGY & FORMATION
Iowaite forms during low-temperature alteration and serpentinization of ultramafic rocks where magnesium-rich minerals interact with oxidizing chloride-bearing fluids. It was first described from Iowa and has since been reported in serpentinites and altered ultramafic complexes elsewhere.

Iowaite is traditionally associated with emotional softness, patience, grounding, and reducing resistance to gradual change. Its formation during alteration of ultramafic rock gives it symbolism of transformation through interaction rather than force.
