Commercial material is commonly described as a mixture of serpentine-group minerals, potentially including antigorite, chrysotile, or related magnesium silicates. GEOLOGY & FORMATION
Serpentine minerals form when ultramafic rocks rich in olivine and pyroxene react with water during hydrothermal alteration, a process called serpentinization. This transformation changes both mineralogy and rock volume and commonly produces green, waxy, fibrous, or massive material.
