Color can reflect chromium, color centers, and other subtle structural effects. Topaz crystallizes in the orthorhombic system and has a hardness of 8 with perfect basal cleavage.

GEOLOGY & FORMATION
Topaz forms in fluorine-rich granitic pegmatites, rhyolitic cavities, greisens, and hydrothermal veins. The classic and most important source of Imperial Topaz is the Ouro Preto region of Minas Gerais, Brazil, where topaz occurs in altered metamorphic and hydrothermal rocks.
