SCIENCE / MINERALOGY
Iceland Spar is a highly transparent variety of calcite, CaCO₃, famous for strong double refraction: an object viewed through a clear cleavage rhomb appears doubled. It crystallizes in the trigonal system, has perfect rhombohedral cleavage, and a Mohs hardness of 3.

GEOLOGY & FORMATION
Classic Iceland Spar formed in cavities and veins within basaltic rocks in Iceland, especially at the historic Helgustaðir quarry. Clear calcite crystals also occur in hydrothermal veins and carbonate cavities elsewhere. Slow, impurity-poor growth produces exceptional optical transparency.
