Hypersthene is an older varietal name for iron-rich orthopyroxene in the enstatite-ferrosilite series. Modern mineralogy generally classifies such material as Fe-bearing enstatite rather than a separate species. It commonly appears dark gray, brown, black, or greenish and may show a silky bronze or silver schiller when polished.

GEOLOGY & FORMATION
Hypersthene-bearing orthopyroxene forms in mafic and ultramafic igneous rocks, high-grade metamorphic rocks, granulites, and some meteorites. It crystallizes under high-temperature conditions and commonly occurs with plagioclase, olivine, clinopyroxene, and garnet.
