Howlite is a calcium borosilicate hydroxide mineral, commonly written Ca₂B₅SiO₉(OH)₅. It crystallizes in the monoclinic system but most often occurs as white nodules with gray or black web-like veining. Well-formed crystals are rare.

GEOLOGY & FORMATION
Howlite forms in evaporitic and borate-rich sedimentary environments, commonly associated with gypsum, anhydrite, colemanite, and other boron minerals. Important deposits occur in California, Canada, Turkey, and other borate districts.
