Hanksite is a rare sodium-potassium sulfate-carbonate-chloride mineral with the formula commonly written Na₂₂K(SO₄)₉(CO₃)₂Cl. It crystallizes in the hexagonal system and forms transparent to translucent prismatic or tabular crystals in colorless, pale yellow, greenish, or gray tones. It is water-soluble and relatively soft.
GEOLOGY & FORMATION
Hanksite forms in highly evaporative saline lake environments where sodium, sulfate, carbonate, chloride, and potassium become strongly concentrated. The classic locality is Searles Lake, California, where thick evaporite sequences host hanksite with trona, borax, halite, and other saline minerals.
