Hackmanite is a sulfur-bearing variety of sodalite, a sodium aluminosilicate chloride mineral. It is famous for tenebrescence: some specimens reversibly deepen or change color after exposure to ultraviolet light and then fade in ordinary light. Colors range from white and gray to pink, lilac, violet, blue, and purple.

GEOLOGY & FORMATION
Hackmanite forms in silica-poor alkaline igneous rocks, metasomatic zones, and marble-associated deposits where sodalite-group minerals crystallize in sodium-rich environments. Important sources include Afghanistan, Greenland, Canada, Myanmar, Russia, and Pakistan.
