Green Sardonyx
SCIENCE / MINERALOGY
Sardonyx is a banded chalcedony variety composed of alternating sard-colored and lighter onyx-like layers. 'Green Sardonyx' is a commercial color term for green-and-white banded chalcedony, but much vividly green material in the market may be dyed or otherwise enhanced. The host remains microcrystalline quartz.
GEOLOGY & FORMATION
Banded chalcedony develops as silica-rich fluids repeatedly precipitate microscopic quartz layers within cavities and fractures. Color changes reflect changing impurities and mineral inclusions from one growth episode to another. When commercial green coloration is artificial, the treatment occurs after mining rather than during geological formation.
METAPHYSICAL PROPERTIES
Green Sardonyx is traditionally associated with stability, loyalty, confidence, emotional balance, and maintaining constructive relationships. Its layered structure symbolizes consistency and commitment, while green coloration adds compassion and growth. It is often used when someone wants to stay dependable without becoming rigid.
