Green Opal is a green variety of opal, a hydrated amorphous silica mineraloid commonly represented as SiO₂·nH₂O. Most green material is common opal without play-of-color. Its color may be produced by nickel, iron-bearing minerals, clay inclusions, or other finely dispersed phases depending on locality.

GEOLOGY & FORMATION
Opal forms when silica-bearing water circulates through fractures, cavities, volcanic ash, or sediment and gradually deposits hydrated silica. Green common opal is especially associated with altered volcanic rocks and weathering environments. Important material is found in Madagascar, Peru, Tanzania, Australia, and several other regions.
