Green Onyx is a commercially ambiguous name. True onyx is parallel-banded chalcedony, a microcrystalline quartz material with a hardness near 7, but much decorative 'Green Onyx' on the market is actually banded calcite or aragonite with a hardness near 3–4. Color ranges from pale mint and cream to deep green and may be natural, enhanced, or derived from included minerals.

GEOLOGY & FORMATION
True chalcedony onyx forms when silica-rich fluids repeatedly line cavities and fractures with parallel microcrystalline quartz layers. Calcite-based decorative onyx forms instead from carbonate-rich spring, cave, or hydrothermal deposits. Because both materials are sold under the same trade name, geological description should follow the verified composition of the specimen.
