Dumortierite is an aluminum borosilicate mineral with a complex formula commonly represented as Al₇BO₃(SiO₄)₃O₃. It crystallizes in the orthorhombic system and commonly occurs as fibrous, columnar, or massive material in blue, violet-blue, purple, pink, brown, and green tones. Fine dumortierite inclusions can also color quartz blue.
GEOLOGY & FORMATION
Dumortierite forms primarily in high-grade aluminum-rich metamorphic rocks, quartz veins, and some granitic pegmatites. It develops under high-temperature conditions and may occur with quartz, kyanite, sillimanite, corundum, tourmaline, and other aluminous minerals. Important sources include Brazil, Madagascar, Namibia, France, the United States, and several other regions.
