Dragi, or Dragon Jade, is a trade name applied to decorative jade material, commonly described as nephrite. Nephrite is not a single crystal species but a tough felted aggregate of tremolite–actinolite amphibole fibers. Color and pattern can be influenced by iron content and associated minerals.
GEOLOGY & FORMATION
Nephrite develops through metasomatic alteration where magnesium-rich ultramafic rocks or dolomitic carbonates interact with silica- and calcium-bearing fluids. The tightly interlocking amphibole fibers produced during this process give nephrite its exceptional toughness. Commercial Dragon Jade should be evaluated by source because the trade name can be used broadly.
