Dolomite is calcium magnesium carbonate, CaMg(CO₃)₂, and crystallizes in the trigonal system. It commonly forms curved rhombohedral crystals, saddle-shaped aggregates, and massive rock-forming material. The mineral dolomite is also the principal constituent of the sedimentary rock dolostone.
GEOLOGY & FORMATION
Dolomite forms through several processes, including replacement of limestone by magnesium-rich fluids, hydrothermal vein deposition, direct precipitation in some restricted sedimentary settings, and metamorphism of dolomitic carbonate rocks. It is widespread globally and commonly associated with calcite, quartz, fluorite, sulfides, and evaporite minerals.
