SCIENCE / MINERALOGY
Dioptase is a hydrated copper cyclosilicate, Cu₆Si₆O₁₈·6H₂O, known for intensely saturated emerald-green to blue-green crystals. It crystallizes in the trigonal system and usually forms short prismatic crystals with a brilliant vitreous luster. Despite its gem-like appearance, it is relatively brittle and has perfect cleavage.

GEOLOGY & FORMATION
Dioptase forms as a secondary mineral in the oxidized zones of copper deposits, especially in arid environments where silica-rich and copper-rich fluids interact. It commonly occurs with calcite, chrysocolla, malachite, cerussite, and other oxidized ore minerals. Famous specimens come from Namibia, Kazakhstan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Arizona.
