Diopside is a calcium magnesium silicate pyroxene, CaMgSi₂O₆, crystallizing in the monoclinic system. It occurs in white, gray, brown, black, and especially green varieties. Chromium-bearing gem diopside can show an intense emerald-green color, while iron-rich varieties become darker.

GEOLOGY & FORMATION
Diopside forms in metamorphosed carbonate rocks, skarns, mantle-derived and ultramafic rocks, mafic igneous rocks, and some meteorites. It is particularly common where calcium-rich rocks react with silica and magnesium during metamorphism or metasomatism. Gem material is mined in Russia, Pakistan, Tanzania, and other regions.
