Desert Rose Selenite is a rosette-forming variety of gypsum, CaSO₄·2H₂O, commonly incorporating abundant sand grains. Strictly speaking, 'selenite' traditionally refers to clear crystalline gypsum, but the desert rose name is widely used for these flower-like gypsum aggregates. The rosettes form flattened blade-shaped crystals radiating around a center.
GEOLOGY & FORMATION
Desert roses develop in arid evaporitic environments where sulfate-rich groundwater rises by capillary action and evaporates near the surface. Gypsum crystallizes among sand grains, trapping sediment as the rosette grows. Famous occurrences are found in North Africa, the Middle East, Mexico, Oklahoma, and other dry saline regions.
