Cryolite is sodium aluminum fluoride, Na₃AlF₆. It crystallizes in the monoclinic system and can appear colorless, white, gray, brown, or reddish, often with a greasy to vitreous luster. Its refractive index is close to that of water, causing transparent fragments to become visually subtle when immersed.
GEOLOGY & FORMATION
Natural cryolite is rare and forms in highly evolved fluorine-rich granitic and alkaline systems. The historic Ivittuut deposit in Greenland was once the world's principal natural source and became economically important in aluminum processing. Smaller occurrences are known from several pegmatitic and alkaline complexes.
METAPHYSICAL PROPERTIES
Cryolite is traditionally associated with mental spaciousness, perspective, independence, and examining assumptions that normally go unquestioned. Its unusual optical behavior makes it a symbolic mineral of things that can be present without being immediately obvious. It is often used for meditation and for challenging rigid thought patterns.
