Crocoite is lead chromate, PbCrO₄, and crystallizes in the monoclinic system. It is famous for brilliant orange, red-orange, and scarlet prismatic crystals with adamantine luster. Its intense color comes from chromate in the crystal structure.

GEOLOGY & FORMATION
Crocoite forms as a secondary mineral in the oxidized zones of lead deposits where chromium-bearing groundwater reacts with lead minerals such as galena or cerussite. The world's most spectacular crystals come from Tasmania, Australia, with other occurrences in Russia, Brazil, the United States, and Europe.
