Covellite is copper sulfide, CuS, and crystallizes in the hexagonal system. It is famous for metallic indigo-blue to violet surfaces and commonly occurs as thin platy crystals, foliated masses, coatings, or replacement material. It is soft, strongly anisotropic, and may tarnish rapidly.

GEOLOGY & FORMATION
Covellite forms in hydrothermal copper deposits and is especially common as a secondary mineral in supergene enrichment zones where earlier copper sulfides are chemically altered. It occurs with chalcocite, bornite, chalcopyrite, pyrite, and other copper minerals. Important occurrences include Montana, Italy, Serbia, Chile, and many major copper districts.

METAPHYSICAL PROPERTIES
Covellite is traditionally associated with intuition, transformation, inner truth, and becoming aware of motives that normally remain beneath the surface. Its deep blue metallic appearance gives it symbolism of looking beyond appearances. It is often used for self-examination and for identifying what actually needs to change before taking action.
