Copal is partially polymerized or subfossil tree resin rather than a mineral. It represents an intermediate stage between fresh resin and fully mature amber, although the boundary between the terms is not defined by one universal age. Copal is generally softer, more chemically reactive, and less polymerized than most ancient amber.

GEOLOGY & FORMATION
Tree resin hardens after secretion and may become buried in soil or sediment. Over time, volatile compounds are lost and organic molecules cross-link through polymerization. Copal deposits occur in tropical and subtropical regions including East Africa, Central and South America, and parts of Asia.

METAPHYSICAL PROPERTIES
Copal is traditionally associated with purification, warmth, creativity, optimism, and maintaining connection with the living natural world. Because it is geologically younger than amber, it carries symbolism of development still in progress rather than a process fully completed. It is often used to represent renewal and the willingness to continue evolving.
