Colombianite is a trade name for dark natural glassy material found in Colombia. It is commonly described in the crystal trade as a tektite or impact glass, but that origin is not universally established by mineralogical evidence. The safest geological description is a natural silica-rich glass or glassy rock whose exact formation history should be tied to analytical work on a specific locality or specimen.

GEOLOGY & FORMATION
Natural glass can form when silica-rich material is melted and cooled too rapidly for crystals to develop, including volcanic and impact-related settings. Colombianite is collected from weathered surface and alluvial contexts in Colombia. Without diagnostic geochemistry and field evidence, a volcanic, impact, or other melt origin should not be presented as certain.
