Chrysoprase is a translucent apple-green to deep green variety of chalcedony, the microcrystalline form of quartz. Its distinctive color is produced by trace nickel-bearing compounds and extremely fine nickel-rich inclusions rather than chromium, which colors emerald. It commonly occurs as veins, nodules, and fracture fillings.

GEOLOGY & FORMATION
Chrysoprase forms when silica-rich fluids move through strongly weathered nickel-bearing ultramafic rocks such as serpentinites. Nickel released during alteration becomes incorporated into the growing chalcedony. Major sources include Australia, Tanzania, Brazil, Poland, Kazakhstan, and several other ultramafic terrains.
