Chiastolite is a variety of andalusite, Al₂SiO₅, distinguished by dark carbonaceous inclusions arranged in a cross-shaped pattern through the crystal's cross-section. Andalusite crystallizes in the orthorhombic system and is one of three Al₂SiO₅ polymorphs, alongside kyanite and sillimanite.

GEOLOGY & FORMATION
Chiastolite develops during relatively low-pressure contact or regional metamorphism of aluminum-rich sedimentary rocks. As andalusite crystals grow, graphite or other carbonaceous material becomes concentrated into characteristic inclusion sectors. Notable occurrences are found in Spain, France, Russia, China, Australia, and the United States.

Its natural cross pattern has given it symbolic importance in multiple cultures.
