Chevron Amethyst
SCIENCE / MINERALOGY
Chevron Amethyst is a banded variety of amethyst and white quartz displaying repeated V-shaped, zigzag, or chevron patterns. Both components are quartz, SiO₂; the purple zones are amethyst colored by iron-related color centers, while the pale bands are milky or colorless quartz containing abundant microscopic inclusions or scattering features. It is a growth-pattern variety rather than a separate mineral species.
GEOLOGY & FORMATION
Chevron patterns develop when quartz growth conditions change repeatedly during hydrothermal crystallization. Successive stages alternate between purple amethyst and lighter quartz, producing nested V-shaped growth zones when the crystal mass is cut across its growth direction. Important commercial material is associated with Brazil, India, and parts of Africa and Russia.
METAPHYSICAL PROPERTIES
Chevron Amethyst is traditionally associated with intuition, mental clarity, pattern recognition, meditation, and connecting insight with practical understanding. Its repeated V-shaped bands make it a strong symbolic stone for recognizing cycles and seeing how separate experiences fit into a larger pattern. It is often used for reflective work when someone wants both the calm of amethyst and a more structured sense of direction.
