Chalcopyrite is copper iron sulfide, CuFeS₂, and one of the world's most important copper ore minerals. It crystallizes in the tetragonal system and usually appears brass-yellow with metallic luster. Tarnish can create iridescent purple, blue, and green surface colors, which is why some material is marketed as “peacock ore.”

GEOLOGY & FORMATION
Chalcopyrite occurs in hydrothermal veins, porphyry copper deposits, volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits, skarns, and magmatic sulfide systems. It commonly occurs with pyrite, bornite, sphalerite, galena, quartz, and calcite. Large deposits are mined on every inhabited continent.
