Chalcanthite is hydrated copper sulfate, CuSO₄·5H₂O. It crystallizes in the triclinic system and forms vivid blue prismatic crystals, crusts, stalactitic coatings, and granular masses. The mineral is highly water-soluble and can dehydrate or dissolve under ordinary environmental moisture conditions.

GEOLOGY & FORMATION
Chalcanthite is a secondary mineral of oxidized copper deposits, particularly in arid environments where copper-bearing acidic waters evaporate before the mineral can be washed away. It may coat mine walls or form around copper sulfide deposits. Because attractive blue crystals are easy to grow artificially from copper sulfate solution, synthetic specimens are extremely common.
