SCIENCE / MINERALOGY
Carnelian is an orange to red-brown variety of chalcedony composed primarily of microcrystalline quartz. Its warm color is produced largely by finely dispersed iron oxides and iron-bearing compounds. Carnelian ranges from translucent orange to darker reddish brown and commonly takes a high polish.

GEOLOGY & FORMATION
Carnelian forms when silica-rich fluids deposit chalcedony in volcanic cavities, fractures, or sedimentary settings and iron becomes incorporated during growth or later alteration. Major modern sources include India, Brazil, Madagascar, Uruguay, and other regions with abundant agate and chalcedony deposits.

Carnelian is traditionally associated with creativity, vitality, confidence, courage, and personal initiative. It is commonly used when a person understands what they want but needs the energy to begin.
