Blue Topaz is a blue variety of topaz, Al₂SiO₄(F,OH)₂. Topaz crystallizes in the orthorhombic system and is notably hard at 8 on the Mohs scale. Natural blue topaz exists but is comparatively uncommon; much of the vivid blue material in jewelry has been produced by irradiation followed by heat treatment of pale or colorless topaz.

GEOLOGY & FORMATION
Topaz forms in fluorine-rich granitic pegmatites, rhyolitic cavities, and hydrothermal veins. Important deposits occur in Brazil, Pakistan, Russia, Sri Lanka, Nigeria, and the United States. Natural blue crystals can develop where trace defects and irradiation alter the way the crystal absorbs visible light.
