Blue Onyx is a commercial name that can be ambiguous. In the strict mineralogical sense, onyx is straight-banded chalcedony, SiO₂, and blue onyx may describe blue, white, and brown banded chalcedony. In the decorative-stone trade, however, “onyx” is also frequently applied to banded calcite or aragonite, so composition must be verified.

GEOLOGY & FORMATION
True chalcedony onyx forms through repeated deposition of microcrystalline silica in cavities and fractures. Parallel bands reflect changing fluid chemistry during growth. Blue chalcedony-type material is reported from Argentina, Mexico, and other silica-bearing regions, while calcite-based decorative “onyx” forms by entirely different carbonate processes.
