Black Tourmaline is usually schorl, the iron-rich member of the tourmaline group. Schorl is a complex borosilicate with sodium, iron, aluminum, boron, silicon, oxygen, and hydroxyl in its structure. It crystallizes in the trigonal system and commonly forms long, vertically striated prismatic crystals, radiating aggregates, and massive material.

GEOLOGY & FORMATION
Schorl is widespread in granitic pegmatites, granites, metamorphic rocks, and hydrothermal veins. It forms where boron-rich fluids interact with iron-bearing host rocks during late-stage magmatic or metamorphic processes. Major specimen-producing regions include Brazil, Namibia, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Madagascar, and the United States.
