Opal is hydrated amorphous silica, commonly written SiO₂·nH₂O, and is a mineraloid rather than a crystalline mineral. “Black Opal” refers to opal with a dark body tone; in gemology the term is especially important for precious opal showing play-of-color against that dark background, while some crystal-trade material is opaque common opal without play-of-color.

GEOLOGY & FORMATION
Opal forms when silica-bearing water moves through fractures, cavities, or porous sediment and gradually deposits hydrated silica. Precious play-of-color requires unusually ordered arrays of silica spheres, whereas common opal lacks that regular structure. Famous black precious opal is associated with Lightning Ridge, Australia, while dark common opal occurs in other volcanic and sedimentary environments worldwide.
