Black Moonstone
SCIENCE / MINERALOGY
Black Moonstone is a trade name for dark gray, brown, or nearly black feldspar material displaying the soft floating optical effect associated with moonstone. Moonstone is generally an intergrowth of feldspars whose microscopic lamellae scatter light to produce adularescence. The exact feldspar proportions and inclusions vary from deposit to deposit.
GEOLOGY & FORMATION
Moonstone develops in feldspar-rich igneous rocks and pegmatites where high-temperature feldspar later unmixes into microscopic layers during cooling. These layers create the optical sheen. Dark commercial material is particularly associated with Madagascar, although moonstone-group feldspars occur in several countries.
METAPHYSICAL PROPERTIES
Black Moonstone is traditionally associated with intuition, emotional protection, new beginnings, and navigating uncertainty. It retains moonstone's symbolic connection with cycles and inner awareness but adds a stronger grounding quality. It is often used during transitions when someone wants to remain receptive to intuition without becoming emotionally overwhelmed.
