Black Mica is commonly sold under the older name Biotite. In modern mineralogy, biotite is better treated as a series or compositional field of dark trioctahedral micas rather than one single IMA-approved species. These sheet silicates are rich in potassium, magnesium, and iron and split perfectly into thin elastic sheets because of their layered crystal structure.

GEOLOGY & FORMATION
Dark mica is widespread in igneous and metamorphic rocks. It crystallizes in granites, diorites, pegmatites, gneisses, schists, and contact-metamorphic rocks, where its chemistry records magma composition and metamorphic conditions. Large book-like crystals can form in coarse pegmatites, while fine flakes are common rock-forming components.

Black Mica is traditionally associated with reflection, protection, emotional perspective, and grounded self-awareness. Its mirror-like sheets make it a natural symbol for examining one's own reactions and motivations before projecting them outward. It is commonly used for boundary work, releasing emotional clutter, and maintaining calm observation during stressful interpersonal situations.
