Black Kyanite is a dark variety of kyanite, Al₂SiO₅, an aluminum silicate polymorph related chemically to andalusite and sillimanite. Kyanite is triclinic and commonly forms elongated, bladed, fan-like aggregates. Its black to gray coloration reflects inclusions and impurities rather than a separate mineral species. A distinctive feature of kyanite is its directional hardness: it is softer parallel to the crystal length and harder across it.

GEOLOGY & FORMATION
Kyanite is an important index mineral of medium- to high-pressure metamorphism. It develops in aluminum-rich metamorphic rocks such as schists and gneisses, and may also occur in quartz-rich veins and pegmatitic settings affected by metamorphism. Black bladed material sold commercially is especially associated with Brazil, India, Nepal, and parts of Africa.

Black Kyanite is traditionally used for grounding, energetic clearing, self-protection, and restoring a sense of internal alignment.
