Black Jade is a commercial color term rather than a single mineral species. Genuine jade is either jadeite, a sodium-aluminum pyroxene, or nephrite, a dense felted aggregate of tremolite–actinolite amphibole. Black coloration can result from abundant dark mineral inclusions, iron-rich components, graphite, or exceptionally dark host material. Because several unrelated black stones are also sold as “black jade,” identification of the actual jade mineral is important.

GEOLOGY & FORMATION
Jadeite typically forms in high-pressure, low-temperature metamorphic environments associated with subduction zones, while nephrite develops through metasomatic alteration of ultramafic or carbonate-bearing rocks. Dark varieties occur where the jade-forming system incorporates iron-rich or carbonaceous material. Commercial black jade is reported from several regions, including Asia, Australia, and North America, but the exact mineralogy varies by deposit.
